Unsealed or improperly sealed pavement joints can undergo deterioration of their corners and walls, which is common when a flexible pavement and rigid pavement meet. This type of pavement distress allows greater channeling and pooling of water and infiltration of incompressible materials, widening the joint and causing material to break loose.
Deterioration of cracks and expansion joints will continue and cause greater damage, including stripping, voids, potholes, raveling, and more. This creates a particular driving hazard for two-wheeled vehicles.
