Often caused by thermal expansion/contraction, transverse cracks run perpendicular to the pavement centerline (or laydown direction) and are not part of any pavement joints or seams. Transverse cracking may also result from a reflection crack of an underlying layer or bitumen (asphalt binder) hardening.
Pavement thermal expansion/contraction will continue, causing the surface to be more rough and allowing water channeling, penetration, and damage to the pavement base. Pavement cracks will widen, and a compromised base will quickly lead to larger fissures, gaps, and pavement deterioration, such as voids, potholes, raveling, and more.
