Unsealed or improperly sealed pavement joints can undergo deterioration of their corners and walls, which is common when a flexible pavement and rigid pavement meet. This type of pavement distress allows greater channeling and pooling of water and infiltration of incompressible materials, widening the joint and causing material to break loose.
The intentional seams left in concrete pavement must be sealed with a flexible material to both seal out moisture and allow for thermal expansion/contraction.
